My experience with gaming
Most people, myself included, enjoy playing games.
Since my secondary school days, I have enjoyed gaming on my mobile phone. However, it was only during my polytechnic days that I started to discover computer games, since I didn't have access to a PC or laptop back then.
Once I delved into computer gaming, I discovered a new realm to the gaming world. Unlike many mobile games designed merely for killing time, computer and console games are crafted to provide an enjoyable gaming experience.
Of course not all games fit this description, but there are numerous exceptional titles available on PC and consoles such as God of War and Elden Ring that offer rich storytelling, stunning visuals, and engaging gameplay.
The moment I graduated from polytechnic, I enlisted into National Service like all Singaporean males, which left me with considerably less time to devote to computer gaming.
I found myself in need of a portable gaming device that would allow me to enjoy gaming on the go! That's when I discovered the Steam Deck, a solution that perfectly fit my needs. After conducting some research, I made the decision to purchase it.
Now, after nearly a year of using the Steam Deck, I want to share my experience with this device.
What is a Steam Deck?
So, what exactly is a Steam Deck? Developed by Valve, also known as Steam, the Steam Deck is a device designed to bring the world of PC gaming to a portable platform, much like the PSP did for console gaming. Steam is one of the most popular video game digital distribution services on PC, much like google play service on Android.

The pros of Steam Deck
Steam Deck offers impressive performance, allowing it to smoothly run most games. Some of its features include:
- It is friendly for new users as it is highly user-friendly and easy to navigate
- The device offers extensive software customizations
- There are numerous online resources and tutorials to help users unlock its full potential

The cons of Steam Deck
However, the Steam Deck does have its share of drawbacks. I have listed some of them based on my experience:
- The screen quality falls short when compared to modern portable gaming devices like the Switch OLED or even mobile phone screens.
- Relatively short battery life of approximately 2-6 hours of playtime on a single charge, depending on the games played
- Chunky design, which is noticeably bulkier compared to other gaming devices like the Switch OLED.
- Steep learning curve on learning how to operate the Steam Deck
- Steam Deck is not available worldwide, though it is still possible to purchase it from unofficial retailers. However, this may pose potential warranty issues as they are not authorized retailers.
Is the Steam Deck Worth it?
Despite these drawbacks, I have no regrets about my purchase as the Steam Deck still caters to my needs. It is noteworthy that a Steam Deck is not cheap, ranging from USD$399 to USD$649 according to the storage capabilities.
I spent approximately S$950, inclusive of GST and shipment fees when I bought the 512GB Steam Deck in August 2022.
From my personal experience, I believe the Steam Deck is worth buying if you desire the ability to play games anywhere. However, if portability is not what you are looking for in a gaming device, I wouldn't recommend purchasing it now as it is not yet a polished product. While it may be cheaper than a gaming laptop, it is still pricier than a PS5, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch.
Life lesson learned
The life lessons I have learned through gaming extend beyond the virtual world and have had a profound impact on my approach to life.
One of the most valuable lessons is the importance of trying out different things.
In the gaming realm, I've noticed that many people tend to stick to a few popular games like CS:GO or League of Legends. However, the world of gaming offers an incredible diversity of experiences, and I encourage everyone to venture out and try new games.
Similarly, in the real world, I believe it's crucial to explore different activities and opportunities. You never know when you might stumble upon a new hobby or passion that enriches your life.
While I genuinely enjoy gaming, I firmly believe it should be an enjoyable pursuit rather than an addiction.
It's essential for us to maintain a healthy balance between gaming and other aspects of our lives, such as work or studies.
Whenever I find myself unable to stop gaming, I take a step back and reflect on my priorities. I remind myself that gaming is just one facet of my life, and there are more important things to attend to.
As a student, I've discovered several strategies that help me strike a healthy equilibrium. Setting clear boundaries and allocating dedicated time for both studying and gaming is crucial. By creating a schedule and sticking to it, I ensure that I devote sufficient time to my academic responsibilities while also allowing myself some leisure time for gaming.
For me, maintaining a healthy relationship with gaming also means recognising when I am tired or burnt out. Taking breaks and allowing myself time to recharge ensures that
I approach gaming with enthusiasm and enjoyment, rather than letting it control my life.
It's all about finding a healthy balance and being mindful of our overall well-being.
While some might frown upon gaming, it has taught me valuable life lessons about exploration, balance, and self-awareness, highlighting the importance of trying new things, enjoying gaming in moderation, and teaching me to prioritize my responsibilities in life.
