Every year, Christmas comes a little too soon. Before I know it, it’s a week to Christmas and I have zero gifts prepared.
Shopping for gifts can be difficult and tiring especially when you don’t know what your friends want. On top of that, not all of us have the luxury of time to hunt for the perfect gift (or the luxury of cash to be ballin’ too).
So here’s how I do it. Leading up to Christmas, with every last-minute and panicked brain cells left, I try to prepare gifts that are witty, funny and unique. Sometimes, giving your friends a good laugh may be the best present ever!
The best part? These gifts don’t only work for the festive season! You can use them for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions!
#1 Spotify Playlist Present
‘A Present For You’ Playlist | Photo credit: Hannah Chua
This is a playlist I created for when I didn’t have a gift for a friend and I felt really bad.
You can put together all sorts of message for your friend and even add your friend’s name as a song. Find your friend’s name in this playlist!
If you’re feeling a little fancy, create a physical mixtape for your friend using these cute and retro cassette thumbdrives!

These don’t come by easily but you can search for them online. (I’ve gotten mine on Carousell before!)
#2 Fruit Puns
Get some fruits from the supermarket and wrap with a cheesy note.
- Lemon: I love you to lemon and back
- Raisin: You’re the raisin I smile
- Pear: You’re pear-fect for me

This gift idea is super low-budget and easy to find! Though it may not seem like much, I still find it super cute to give a bunch of fruits to unsuspecting friends.
#3 Prank Box
How do you spice up even the most boring gift? It’s all about how your friends feel when they open their gift!
Wrap your real present with a prank box to throw your friends off. Watch their confused face turn into a smile when they realise it’s a prank!
Searching Amazon for funny gifts this Christmas, I was amazed that there are people who create boxes for fake products that look so real yet ridiculous!
However, if you don’t think it will reach you in time before Christmas, using any other boxes at home works too.
A content creator on Instagram pranked his Mum for her birthday by putting an iPad box in a jigsaw puzzle box. Little did she know, he put the jigsaw puzzle pieces in the iPad box too—It’s a double prank!

#4 Elf Yourself
Put you and your friends’ faces on dancing elves!

Find the funniest and most unglam photos of your friends and upload to video e-card platforms such as ElfYourself.
Try out different templates for the festive season! Pick one that you like the most and click ‘Let’s Dance’ to generate your personalised video.
#5 Friendship Coupons
Give your friends a coupons to redeem any time! Whether it’s a treat or a heart-to-heart talk (HTHT), be as creative as you can.
This is a thoughtful gift for your friend to use when they need it. Put specific activities as coupons that you know your friend appreciates—show your care for them this Christmas!

#6 Give Yourself
As a last resort, put a gift wrapping ribbon on your head, walk up to your friend and say “My presence is your present’.
If it comes to this, maybe you should start planning your Christmas gifts earlier next year.
Finding the perfect Christmas gift can be stressful, but it’s the thought that counts. I hope that your friends feel loved this Christmas by your thought for them!
