An Unconventional Locker

By Manfred Ong, SP Graduate

I found a hose reel cabinet outside my design studio that was unlocked, and for two years that place became my personal locker ๐Ÿ˜ I think I left a picnic mat inside... Legend has it that it’s still there.

During my final submissions, I lost some drawings for my assignment. I searched the entire studio but couldn’t find them. I searched my entire house and couldn’t find them anywhere too.

20 minutes before the submission was due, I found them in the secret locker.

It’s one of the hose reel cabinets outside T5 at the School of Architecture & the Built Environment if you want to loot it (no guarantee there’s anything left).

Do it for the Gram

By Odelia Ong, NP Graduate

My coursemates and I were flying to Taiwan and we wanted to be featured on Ngee Ann’s Instagram page (which has a track record of reposting photos by students) so we thought it would be a great idea to take a mandatory #airportselfie in onesies. All nine of us dressed up in onesies, took a photo and proceeded to ‘unprivate’ our Instagram accounts so that our tags would be seen by the Ngee Ann Poly Instagram account.

Odelia (in a green onesie, front row) and her friends wearing onesies at the airport.

However, we didn’t think through this idea carefully because we all changed out of the onesies right after the photo was taken, simply because it was too hot. We had to lug our onesies from Changi Airport all the way to Taiwan and then back to Singapore again. Needless to say, the onesies took up a considerable amount of space in our luggage and none of us wore them during the trip, so they ended up being more of a burden than anything.

Would I do it again? Probably not. But this has certainly been a fun memory to look back upon! And, in case you were wondering, yes we eventually got featured on Ngee Ann’s Instagram. So I guess all the hassle was worth it after all ๐Ÿ˜‰

A Surprise Visit

By Corrie Goh, TP Graduate

Our major submission was due the next morning. We were all extremely stressed as we were rushing to finish it in the studio before running to the opposite building to print our A0 boards.

Our lecturer, at that time, was serving his reservist and wasn't around in the studio often. All we knew was that he was going to be at the submission tomorrow as he would be getting out of reservist the night before.

But we definitely did not expect him to show up at 10:50 pm in the studio in his army uniform, having come straight out from the ‘jungle’. Someone screamed, “VICTOR* IS HERE!” and immediately, everyone started scrambling to grab their stuff, trying to get out of the studio before he stepped into it. It was like seeing a zombie apocalypse come to life.

We wanted to avoid him taking a look at our work and making any further comments because we knew we would have to make changes, which would then delay the printing even more. I felt bad for that one friend in my class who didn't get the memo and got stopped by my lecturer. She had to change a lot of things before the submission. The rest of us who got the memo went to the print shop to finish our work.

Looking back, it was definitely a shocking, messy, and stressful situation to be in. However, it was these strict but friendly lecturers that made Poly memorable. Even to this day, if I bump into them at Poly, they still ask how I am doing and catch up with me!
