Jane Austen once said, “Without music, life would be a blank to me.” Without music, we definitely wouldn’t even be able to survive one day of Circuit Breaker. In this series, poly seniors curate a list of songs that helped them through 2020. Check out Charity’s playlist! While you’re at it, get ready your tiktok and bust out some moves.
Hello my name is Charity!
My favourite duo, Honne, was pretty prophetic. In one of my favourite songs, “Shrink”, they sing “You’d better book me a shrink for 2020 ‘Cause by that time I’m gonna be crazy, crazy” and dang, were they right. But here are the top 3 songs that got me through this ratchet year.
Anysong — Zico
I bet you’ve heard of this one, it was all over tiktok, and you probably secretly practiced the dance as well. With a tune so fun, groovy and catchy, it’s not hard to want to bob along to this song. For the same reasons, it lifted my mood, and I spent hours during CB watching other people doing the Anysong Challenge on tiktok. But the best part of this song was how it was so relatable and real (especially for our introverted friends), it shows that despite having tons of friends around or material things, you can still feel unhappy or not satisfied inside.

Don’t Start Now — Dua Lipa
Another super danceable track (Wow, I’m starting to see a trend here), this song makes me want to get on my two feet, literally and figuratively. The lyrics are about change for the better and being over and stronger after a heartbreak, not taking the person back. Even with no heart breaks this year, Dua Lipa makes me feel empowered to let go of things that have held me back, get on with life and be the best me with her amazing sultry vocals. They say living your best life is the best revenge, but you know what? I’m gonna live my best life and I’m doing it for me.

HIP — Mamamoo
Ok, this song came out in 2019 but I only discovered it in 2020. But before you disqualify my list, please hear me out on why this song deserves a spot. I was hooked at the start only because it was such a funky and playful song that didn’t waste time on a build up and jumped straight into beat. It was the perfect song to have on repeat as I played Mobile Legends while being stuck at home (I think that’s how it ended up topping my Spotify wrapped most played song this year). Curious about what Mamamoo were singing, I finally googled the translation and found the lyrics pretty inspiring. One segment sings
(Attention) wherever you go
(Reflection) you can shine
There’s only one you in this world
But why’re you doing that?
You’re spitting in your own face
Thanks to everyone who provoked me
Right back at the losers who stopped there
Thanks to you, my mentality is strong
I’ll be on my way to make my next album
We’re all going to face naysayers and people who bring us down and spit in our face some point in our life, but we are each uniquely made creatures and we don’t have to spit in our own faces. Though we may not be on our way to make our next album like Mamamoo, I think we can all learn to adopt their bold and confident spirit, to take those criticisms as fuel to reach our own goals or to be metally resilient.
When asked about the concept behind the song and MV in a HIP Showcase on TongTongTV, Wheein said, “This time, we wanted to say that whatever you are and whatever job you have, you can still be great and HIP, depending on how you view yourself and the world. In other words, whatever or wherever you are, you deserve to be blessed and acknowledged for what you do.” It hit me hard and brought my mind back, grounded my thoughts, especially during a time when I was constantly on social media and inevitably started comparing myself with friends and influencers. Success, good grades, material wealth, looks, physique, artistic talents, latest gadgets, stylish clothes, the new hobbies they were cultivating, friends who send them food, having a partner, even the pets they had. The world was telling what I did not have or should be having. But those things are not what makes me me and neither can they make me HIP. And for that, this song deserves that top spot on my most played and a spot on this list.
And that’s a wrap! You probably have seen enough friends sharing their Year In Review and boasting about their number of minutes they have listened to. Another thing that we've been hearing all year long is Among Us. We know it's not a song, but there wasn't a day where we didn't hear a friend jio us to play. Wait, your friends didn’t jio you? It's ok, Poly Parcel is having an Among Us Live Arcade where you can play to win points and redeem Among Us merchandise!
