What if we can't travel again?: Yeah... about that.

The day was long and slow. My neck and back were aching so I decided to take a short rest before moving on the next section of the museum. A notification by CNA popped up. Even then, I couldn’t believe that I would willingly join their telegram channel for the latest Covid-19 updates. Clicking on it revealed the worst news that all Singaporeans were advised to defer all non-essential travel. As dramatic as it sounds, my head started to spin and I felt like I was being swallowed into a vortex of despair. This meant that my long-awaited break to visit Japan that I had been arduously planning for would not come to pass. Life afterwards was never the same again.

I am sure that I’m not the only one who felt this way. Even though our supposed pain pales in comparison to those stranded in Singapore and are unable to return home, Singaporeans seemed to collectively groan in increasing intensity whenever more travel announcements were made.

This got me thinking: What if we really cannot travel again?

As that thought slowly became a reality, I found myself having to grapple with the notion of never leaving Singapore ever again. This left me with two options: I could either whine endlessly about not being able to smell the crisp mountain air of Tateyama or I could learn to appreciate the beauty that Singapore has to offer.

Eventually, my perspective shifted to that of how little I’ve appreciated Singapore all these years and I sought to rediscover the little red dot that I call home I sought to change.

In my mini journey of rediscovering our Garden State, I realised that there were many interesting locations that I’ve never known about! The most memorable location has to be  Singapore’s last remaining kampung. There are also floating restaurants and other islands aside from Sentosa that have a lot to offer.

Attractions aside, I’ve grown to appreciate how convenient Singapore is and how different areas of our island feature unique architecture.  We might not have crisp mountain air to breathe in, but there are plenty of hiking spots that allow us to soak in nature’s aura away from the buzz of the busy city.

Although I am still bummed about not being able to travel any time soon, I am learning to appreciate and enjoy what we already have here in sunny Singapore.
